Maine’s most populated city has once again earned national acclaim for its vibrant beer scene, as Portland made Travel + Leisure magazine’s list of America’s 20 Best Cities for Beer Lovers.
The New York-based travel magazine placed Portland at No.14, ahead of brew capitals that include Boston, which is home to the second-largest craft brewery in the country, Boston Beer Co. — the company behind Samuel Adams.
Travel + Leisure singled out Shipyard and Allagash brewing companies for being early starters in the microbrew movement of the 1990s, adding that Portland has been a “beer-nerd magnet for years” thanks to that pair of popular breweries. Urban Farm Fermentory in the city’s East Bayside neighborhood also received a nod from the magazine for its use of local ingredients to make new and exciting brews.
