Child development programs get $10M

Child development programs in Presque Isle, Bangor and Farmingdale are receiving more than $10 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The funding allocation will allow the communities to continue their Head Start programs, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King.

The funding includes:

• $3,030,735 for Aroostook County Action Program in Presque Isle;

• $4,278,545 for Penquis Community Action Program in Bangor;

• and $2,788,560 for Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation in Farmingdale.

Headstart began in 1965 to “promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional and social services to eligible four and five-year-old preschoolers and their families,” according to the press release. It has served over 30 million children.
