Children's recreation nonprofit, WinterKids, hires executive director

WinterKids, a Westbrook nonprofit that promotes cold-weather activities and recreation for children, has hired Courtney Holub as executive director.

She succeeds Julie Mulkern, who led the group since 2011 and stepped down in March to become CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine.

Holub brings over 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, focusing on creating opportunities for diverse populations. Her career has included philanthropy, program development, leadership and board positions.

“Taking on the role of executive director at WinterKids is a privilege and a thrilling opportunity," said Holub. "As someone whose career in nonprofits was sparked by a sports-based organization, this role perfectly aligns my personal passions and lifestyle with my professional journey.”

Prior to joining WinterKids, she served as a philanthropy advisor for Good Shepherd Food Bank, Maine’s largest hunger relief organization. She has volunteered for three years with the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute, helping empower young women to reach their full potential. Holub also spent over a decade with New England Disabled Sports.

She received a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her master’s degree in nonprofit management from Northeastern University.

“We are thrilled to welcome Courtney as our new executive director,” said Parker Swenson, WinterKids’ board president. “Her deep experience in nonprofit leadership, combined with her passion for inclusivity and outdoor activities, positions WinterKids to enter a new chapter of growth and impact.

"With Courtney at the helm, we are confident that WinterKids will continue to expand its reach and make a lasting difference in the lives of Maine’s children.”

WinterKids started in 1997 as part of the Ski Maine Association with a “learn to ski” program for fifth-graders. In 2000, the program became an independent nonprofit with a mission to promote outdoor learning and winter activities for children and families.

The organization continues to offer its app and a wide variety of activities, including Learn Outside Guides & Virtual Training, Winter Games, Family Days, Learn to Ski Free Days, Welcome to Winter, Peisner Nordic Program, StoryWalk & Snowshoe Loan Program and the D24 Outdoor Fund.
