Cianbro cuts 9 from Brewer facility

Cianbro Corp. laid off 9 employees last week as its work on modules for a Texas oil refinery enters the closing stretch.

The layoffs at Cianbro's Eastern Manufacturing Facility in Brewer are part of an expected downsizing as its contract for the oil refinery expansion wraps up in May, according to the Bangor Daily News. Alan Burton, Cianbro's vice president of human resources, safety and health, told the paper that the facility would likely shrink from its 500 employees to about 100 by the summer, if Cianbro can't find another client. Burton said the company is currently talking to 15 potential clients, but that "the economy has impacted a lot of the clients."

Motiva Enterprises LLC hired Cianbro to build 53 refinery modules for the $7 billion expansion of its Port Arthur Refinery in Texas. A barge with the fifth shipment of modules is scheduled to leave Brewer for Texas around Dec. 18, according to the paper.
