One fifth of Cianbro's Eastern Manufacturing Facility's 500-employee work force in Brewer has been moved to other jobs sites or were recently laid off as the Pittsfield company's Texas refinery module project winds down.
Joe Cote, Cianbro's general manager, told the Bangor Daily News the remaining 400 or so workers will meet with the same fate as the first 100 who were moved to other jobs sites or lost their jobs as company officials struggle to find more work to keep them employed.
Texas-based Motiva Enterprises LLC hired Cianbro to build 50 refinery modules for the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery in Texas, which is in the midst of a $7 billion expansion. In December, with the Motiva project halfway finished, Cianbro cut nine workers and Alan Burton, vice president of human resources, safety and health, said in February Cianbro's work force would be pared down to 100 by June.
Numerous Cianbro employees have been offered jobs at other company work sites either in Maine or in Texas, according to the paper. Cote told the paper the company has reduced the Brewer plant work force by 20%. He said 60% of the workers were transferred to other jobs sites and the 20% of the workers have taken a temporary layoff.
