ME gets $1.2M in drug settlement

Maine is receiving more than $1.2 million as part of a multi-million-dollar national settlement with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

AstraZeneca is required to pay out $520 million in damages and penalties to state and federal governments for improperly marketing Seroquel, an antipsychotic, according to a press release from the Maine Attorney General's Office. AstraZeneca allegedly promoted the sale and use of the drug for conditions not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including anxiety, Alzheimer's disease and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. AstraZeneca was also alleged to have made illegal payments to physicians in return for putting their names on articles written by AstraZeneca and conducting studies for unapproved uses of the drug, among other claims.

The settlement will compensate Medicaid and other federal health care programs for reimbursements of improper use of Seroquel.
