A four-story structure shrouded in secrecy is headed by barge for Portland Harbor today, where it will undergo interior finish work by The Cianbro Cos.
The Portland Press Herald reported the barge left Wednesday from New London, Conn., where the newspaper The Day has tried for weeks to determine what the structure is. It was assembled on a barge at the Admiral Harold E. Shear State Pier in New London.
Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO for Cianbro, said he could not disclose what the building is or how long the work would take at its facility on the Portland waterfront. Vigue told the paper that his company will “outfit the building with a substantial amount of technology.” He said he could not identify the client or describe the building’s use.
Vigue did tell the paper that his company has been competing globally in the market for “E-Rooms,” or modules that have various uses, including serving as control centers for mining or oil drilling operations. Last year, the company fitted three such modules with electronic gear and sent them to an iron ore mining operation in Newfoundland, where they were used as control centers.
