CMP, union clash over contract

Negotiations between Central Maine Power Co. and its union have stalled over contract issues.

About 680 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1837, have been without a contract since May 15, and have authorized a strike if the talks fail, according to VillageSoup. Discussions reached an impasse about two weeks ago over retiree medical benefits and pension plans.

The union opposes CMP's proposed flat fee for retiree medical care costs versus its existing percent-based system, and CMP's proposal to switch from a defined pension plan for new hires to a 401(k) retirement plan.

Company spokesman John Carroll said CMP is offering a five-year contract agreement with 2.5% to 3% pay raises in each year of the contract, as well as base-pay raises and bonuses. Its final offer has been before the union since mid-June.

A union spokesman told VillageSoup that a counteroffer is being prepared.
