Downeast Energy pays $160k EPA fine

Downeast Energy Corp. in Brunswick will pay nearly $160,000 in fines for not complying with federal oil spill prevention laws.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency levied a $157,500 fine against Downeast Energy & Building Supply after an investigation of the company's Springvale oil storage facility discovered that, while there was an oil spill prevention plan in place, it was not fully implemented and did not meet oil spill prevention requirements contained within the Clean Water Act, according to a press release from the EPA. Shortly after being notified of the violations, Downeast Energy declared that six additional facilities did not meet federal standards.

Downeast Energy, which had revenue north of $200 million in 2008, has pledged to bring all seven of its facilities in line with the federal oil spill regulations by August 1.
