Co. pitches Brunswick Landing solar array

A Knox County energy company has proposed a $2 million solar array at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The Power Co. of the midcoast town of Washington is negotiating with the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority to secure a land lease to build the ground-mounted, 500-kilowatt solar array, according to a press release. The company has been searching for a site to establish a demonstration project "that can show the potential of solar development of this scale," owner Rich Simon said in the release. The company submitted a conceptual design to MRRA about a year ago, and has been working with state agencies and financial institutions to secure funding and other incentives. The project would power about 125 houses. The Power Co. also recently finished feasibility studies at the former Loring Air Force Base in Limestone and in Winthrop.

Renewable energy is one of seven industries MRRA has targeted for development at Brunswick Landing, and the authority has established the Brunswick Renewable Energy Center to act as an incubator for energy technology and research. Brunswick Landing is also part of a recently announced Clean Tech Corridor, which aims to attract renewable-energy technology companies to Maine.
