Coffee shop opens in long-vacant downtown Augusta space

A coffee shop has opened in 900 square feet in long-vacant space at 216 Water St.
Huiskamer Coffee House is owned by Grace and Justin Fecteau, and opened Saturday.
Glen Guerrette of Guerrette Properties, owns the three-story building, the Macomber Block.
The coffee shop space has been vacant for more than 10 years, Grace Fecteau said Wednesday morning.
“It was connected to space directly to our left and there were many computer station hookups left behind,” she said.
The coffee shop is Dutch-inspired, and Huiskamer translates to living room. The shop has cozy seating and a fireplace. It also sells bagels and baked goods.
It’s the only coffee shop in downtown Augusta, after the Vickery Cafe closed last year when the building it was in was sold.
The Macomber Block, built in the late 1800s, for a time housed Mid-State College, which closed in 2005. It’s believed the space has been empty since then. The building once also housed retail, and the vintage signs for coffee, fruit, candy and tobacco, are above the shop on the uncovered facade.
There will be a ribbon-cutting at the coffee house at 7 a.m. Friday.
