Coffeehouse wants to be the 'Cheers' for the caffeine-minded

Monday marks the official grand opening of the Bangor-based West Market Square Artisan Coffeehouse, located in Charles Inn hotel in the city’s downtown.

Cheryl Michaud, the coffeehouse’s owner, told the Bangor Daily News that the business will focus on using local ingredients, including coffee beans roasted by the Portland-based Tandem Coffee Roasters, in addition to using milk from Siberia Farms in Hermon and tea from Tea Maineia in Winterport.

“Our beans will be no more than a couple weeks out from being roasted when they’re served — they’ll be very fresh,” Michaud told the BDN.

The coffeehouse will also serve baked goods and lunch items from local cooks.

The homespun quality of the business won’t be limited to its ingredients, with Michaud hoping that the coffeehouse will be as welcoming as more adult-oriented watering holes.

“I see it as a little bit a of a ‘Cheers’ environment, but with coffee,” Michaud told the BDN. “It’s about coffee and community.”

The coffeehouse’s location in the Charles Inn will be known to viewers of the popular Travel Channel show “Hotel Impossible” which featured the hotel in a July 2015 episode. The Big Easy Lounge, which occupied the space West Market Square Artisan Coffeehouse now calls home, closed following the filming of the episode after the hotel’s previous owner decided the bar wasn’t the best for the establishment.
