Colby building biomass plant

Colby College has embarked on construction of a new biomass heating plant that school officials say will replace about one million gallons of heating fuel annually with wood chips and forest waste.

Part of the Waterville college's goal to become carbon neutral by 2015, the $11 million facility is expected to pay for itself in six to 10 years following its completion in fall 2011, according to a press release from the school. The plant will burn low-grade forest waste and debris including bark and treetops collected from sustainable forest operations within 50 miles of the campus.

Twin 400-horsepower biomass-fueled boilers will produce steam for heat, hot water, cooking and cogeneration of electricity, the release states.
