Colby picks from U. of Chicago for new president

Colby College has named David Greene, an executive vice president at the University of Chicago, as its 20th president. Greene will succeed William Adams, who had been president of the nearly 1,900-student liberal arts college in Waterville since 2000.

In an announcement Tuesday, the college said Greene, who starts July 1,  led an expansion of the faculty, creation of new academic institutes and centers, financial aid initiatives, a civic engagement plan and new investments for research and teaching during his seven-year tenure at the University of Chicago. He also oversaw $3.5 billion in capital investment projects while there.

Greene previously served as a vice president at Brown University and as an assistant to the president at Smith College and at Hartnell College in Salinas, Cal.

Green told the Morning Sentinel he plans to start a conversation with the college community about what is needed in the years ahead and that he hopes to build on the college’s connection with the Waterville community.
