Colleges ranked as two of nation's best

A national nonprofit group has rated two of Maine's community colleges among the best two-year community colleges in the nation, putting them in the running for a $1 million award.

The Colorado-based Aspen Institute listed Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield and Washington County Community College in Calais among 120 schools the institute says are the top 10% of the country's 1,200 community colleges, based on student graduation and retention rates, according to the Kennebec Journal. KVCC President Barbara Woodlee told the paper the recognition is one of the most significant the college has received. KVCC has 752 full-time students, and 521 full- and part-time students are expected to graduate May 21. The school's retention rate for full-time students is near 70%.

The schools are eligible to apply for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which will be awarded for the first time in December.
