The state Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs yesterday made recommendations on a number of budget provisions.
The panel approved the governor's plan to close a last-minute, $569 million gap in the 2010-2011 budget. The approved supplemental and biennial budgets include instituting 10 state government shutdown days and requiring state employees to pay part of the cost of their health insurance, according to a press release from the Senate. An earlier plan to institute a 5% across-the-board pay cut was dropped. Lawmakers chose to help meet the budget with $116 million from the state's Rainy Day Fund and the Working Capital Reserve Fund. The biennial general fund budget also includes $409 million in economic stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"This budget will help position Maine for economic recovery, make significant structural changes in government and protect our state's core value," Gov. John Baldacci said in a press release after the committee's unanimous vote.
The budget plans now go before the House and Senate.
