Committee nixes bipartisan tax plan

The Legislature's Appropriations Committee has voted down a plan to overhaul Maine's tax structure, but its supporters say the bill's concepts are still alive.

The Sun Journal reported the bipartisan plan from the so-called "Gang of 11" was unanimously turned down in committee Wednesday, preventing floor debate on the bill as the Legislature crafts the next two-year state budget.

The tax reform plan aimed, generally, to reduce the state's income tax to a flat 4% rate while increasing the sales tax rate and eliminating sales tax exemptions.

The tax plan's chief proponent, Yarmouth Independent Sen. Richard Woodbury, told the paper that he still feels the concepts of the tax reform plan might come back into discussion as lawmakers begin seeking compromise on a spending plan for the state.
