Community college enrollment up

Enrollment at Maine's seven community colleges has grown 57% since the system changed its name and mission five years ago.

In a press conference this morning, Gov. John Baldacci and MCCS President John Fitzsimmons said 4,283 more students are enrolled at the colleges than were enrolled in 2002, the year before the system transitioned from technical colleges to community colleges, according to a press release. Fitzsimmons said the number of students entering the community college system immediately after high school increased 65% over the last five years and preliminary data suggests enrollment this year alone has jumped 6.5%.

This November, voters will be asked to pass $15.5 million in bonding to expand and upgrade MCCS infrastructure, something Fitzsimmons today said is necessary to meet enrollment demands.
