Continental leaves BIA

Continental Airlines has officially pulled out of Bangor International Airport.

The airline in late May said it would cease its twice daily service between Bangor and Newark, N.J., by June 21, but the pull-out date was extended to July 31 in hopes that the airport could find a way to keep the service. Continental said the pull out of Bangor was necessary because of congestion in the Newark area. Assistant Airport Director Tony Caruso told the Bangor Daily News the airport is working with the existing airlines to fill the void in service.

During the past 12 months, Continental carried roughly 47,000 passengers on 50-passenger regional jets between Newark and Bangor, with an average load factor of 74% on their flights, according to the airport. However, the airline had load factors as high as 90% in the last 12 months and had increased service from one flight per day to two flights per day in the last year.
