Maine ski areas report near-record year

Maine's ski areas had their second-best season ever last year, logging more than 1.3 million visits, according to the Ski Maine Association.

Early snowfall and increased snowmaking efforts helped bring in a total of 1,366,752 skier/snowboarder visits, according to a press release from the association. The 2007-2008 season still holds the title of best season on record, with about 1.4 million visits recorded, making last year's visits a 2.5% drop from the previous season. But Maine did grow its share of the northern New England ski market by 1% last year, according to the release.

Skier visits in New Hampshire dropped 3.3% from the previous year, and more than 6% in Vermont, according to the Associated Press.
