Contractor licensing bill dead

A bill that would have required home contractors to be licensed in Maine was stalled after the House and Senate could not reach an agreement.

The House supported the measure with a vote of 76-70 vote last week, but the Senate rejected the bill on Friday, according to the Kennebec Journal. If passed, LD 272, sponsored by Rep. Bruce MacDonald, D-Boothbay, would have required home contractors to be licensed starting in 2013. The bill did not receive support from any of the three senators in the Business, Research, and Economic Development Committee.

Sen. Elizabeth Schneider, D-Orono, and co-chairman of the committee, told the Kennebec Journal she supported licensing contractors but was concerned about the timing of the bill, since the state's first uniform building and energy code will become mandatory for all communities by Jan. 1, 2012. Though MacDonald's amended bill called for licensing to take effect Jan. 1, 2013, opponents argued that any issues with the building code law should be worked out before passing a bill on licensing.
