County approves Bowers wind farm

A proposed 26-turbine wind farm on Bowers Mountain in Down East Maine has received unanimous support from Washington County commissioners.

The 700-acre wind farm proposed by First Wind would be sited on the Washington and Penobscot county border, eight miles south of the Massachusetts company's existing wind farm on Stetson Mountain, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company began testing wind power there last November and detailed its plan to officials in Carroll Plantation and Kossuth Township earlier this year. Land use regulators in July agreed to consider First Wind's proposal to add the 700 acres to the state's list of areas included in its expedited wind permitting process.

The project is expected to generate $40 million in new valuation for the county, according to the paper.
