Covetrus will provide on-the-job training for UNE pharmacy students

Portland-based animal-health company Covetrus (Nasdaq: CVET) is launching a partnership with the University of New England to help train UNE pharmacy students.

Beginning this fall, the Covetrus veterinary pharmacy will serve as a practice site for several fourth-year students to get hands-on experience, according to a news release Tuesday.

The six-week work stints, known as “advanced pharmacy practice experience” rotations, are a graduation requirement for students earning a pharmacy doctorate from UNE or other accredited schools.

UNE conducts a range of rotations, based at its Biddeford and Portland campuses,  but including work at all of the state’s major hospitals, many local pharmacies and a variety of outpatient care sites, according to the university.

Covetrus hopes its APPE will offer students something different.

In addition to practicing in the Covetrus pharmacy, part of the company’s new headquarters still under construction at 86 Newbury St., students will learn about topics such as the application of pharmacy law in veterinary medicine.

“Students can expect to have a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the differences between human and veterinary pharmacy,” Covetrus said in the release. “They will also be in a position to capitalize on the growing number of career opportunities in the animal-health sector.”

The curriculum is modeled after similar rotations Covetrus provides in its Omaha, Neb., pharmacy. Currently, the company offers APPE training for five pharmacy schools across the country.

Robert McCarthy, dean of UNE’s College of Pharmacy, said in the release, “We look forward to partnering with Covetrus, a leader in the animal-health sector and one Maine’s largest employers, to further develop our students and present them with exciting opportunities within the growing animal-health sector.”

Covetrus, which launched in February from the merger of Vets First Choice and the animal-health business of Henry Schein Inc., provides technology, products and services for veterinary practices around the world, and has over 5,000 employees. Last week, Covetrus' stock tumbled 40% in reaction to earnings results during the company's first full quarter of business.
