Credit union probes employee theft

A Brunswick-based credit union announced Wednesday that a longtime employee stole an unspecified amount of money from the institution.

Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union President and CEO Roger Sirois said in a statement that 21-year employee Marsha Richard admitted to embezzling credit union funds, The Times Record reported. Sirois did not provide details on Richard's activities or an investigation by law enforcement and auditors, but did say that no credit union members were affected. A Topsham law firm told the paper that Atlantic Regional has filed a civil lawsuit against Richard, who has been fired.

Brunswick police were alerted about potential theft in October 2010, but the investigation is now being handled by federal authorities "due to the potential amount of money they could be talking about," Brunswick Police Commander Kevin Schofield told the paper.
