Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine is among 31 nonprofits in Cumberland and York counties awarded a $100 grant from Town & Country Federal Credit Union as part of a month-long charity drive in May.
The "Nonprofit A Day in the Month of May" campaign, part of the Scarborough-based credit union's Local Helping Local initiative in response to the pandemic's economic impact, awarded a total of $3,100 — from $100 for each day in May. In the case of Big Brothers Big Sisters, it was matched for more than three years.
Jennifer Hutchins, executive director of the Maine Association of Non-Profits, said the support and awareness comes at a critical time.
"Highlighting the unique role and value of our nonprofits is key to forging effective partnerships that will determine Maine’s path forward out of the crisis," she said in a news release. "We appreciate Town & Country spotlighting the significant financial challenges facing non-profits at this time, and for making contributions that have a positive impact on our communities right now.”
Her comments come after her organization published a guide to how Maine nonprofits can safely reopen that has been downloaded by almost 400 organizations, a spokesperson told Mainebiz on Tuesday.
Noting the pandemic's far-reaching implications for hundreds of Maine nonprofits, Town & Country president and CEO David Libby said, "Many have experienced significant increases in expenses and/or a vast reduction in donations."
He added: "Non-profits play a crucial role in providing services to our communities and we believe its important to not only provide financial support but to also build awareness about the challenges that many non-profits in our area are facing right now."
Nonprofit beneficiaries for the May initiative were selected from suggestions from visitors to Town & Country's Facebook page, as reported in a Mainebiz Giving Tuesday Now news roundup in early May.
Town & Country spokesman Jon Paradise told Mainebiz on Tuesday that about 130 organizations had been highlighted or suggested, and noted that the credit union does other widespread community outreach and support throughout the year including its Better Neighbor Fund, which awarded $25,000 in grants to nonprofits every fall.
"However, due to the popularity of this effort," he added, "we may consider adding some form of this initiative in future years. It was well-received by everyone."
He also provided Mainebiz with a list of all 31 beneficiaries below.
