Glenn Cummings is leaving his post in the Obama administration to become president and executive director of Fairfield-based nonprofit Good Will-Hinckley.
Cummings, the former Maine Speaker of the House, in May 2009 was named deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Vocational and Adult Education in the U.S. Department of Education. In a press release from Good Will-Hinckley, Cummings said he wanted to return to Maine to continue his work on educational initiatives. "...The opportunity to be on the ground, leading an organization toward today's most valuable educational practices and most sustainable fiscal policies appealed to me very much," he said in the release. Cummins will begin the job in September.
Good Will-Hinckley has also begun working with the Maine Community College System to explore a potential partnership that could boost the nonprofit. Good Will-Hinckley Home for Boys & Girls, which provides educational programs for troubled youth, has been working to rebuild since it laid off more than 100 people and shuttered most of its residential and educational programs last year due to budget problems. The collaboration with MCCS could include selling or leasing land and buildings on its 2,450-acre campus, an idea first presented as part of Good Will-Hinckley's strategic plan released in April, or other efforts related to education and job training, according to the release.
