Criminal investment fraud charges against Rent-a-Husband founder Kaile Warren of Windham could be dismissed, with a decision expected in the coming days.
Cumberland County Superior Court Judge Thomas Warren heard arguments Friday on Kaile Warren's motion to dismiss the three charges of securities fraud, theft by deception and sale of unregistered securities, on which the handyman company founder was indicted in December and April, according to the Portland Press Herald. Warren's lawyers argued any laws he broke were done so unintentionally and through the guidance of law firm Preti Flaherty, which represented him for two years until 2008. Warren pleaded not guilty to all three counts. However, prosecutor Assistant Attorney General Michael Colleran argued Warren could still be held criminally accountable even if he unknowingly broke the law, while Preti Flaherty has not commented on the case.
Warren, who founded Rent-a-Husband in 1996, is accused of misleading investors about the company's success and owing more than $1.6 million to dozens of people.
