The 15,540-square-foot horse arena and office space being built at Windham’s Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals was crowned with its new cupola Monday, and the building is expected to be completed by the end of October.
“[It] was a big day at the MSSPA,” said Meris Bickford, chief executive officer of the MSSPA Tuesday after the cupola was placed on the roof of the Lawrence J. Keddy and Marilyn Goodreau Equine Rehabilitation Facility.
The cupola features a running horse weathervane and has windows, which will be lit.
“[It] will be a new beacon of help, hope and home to abused or neglected Maine horses,” Bickford said.
The $2 million project at the 124-acre farm, which concentrates solely on horse rehabilitation, will strengthen the organization's mission to rehabilitate horses and find them new homes, Bickford said earlier this summer.
The new building consolidates the 146-year-old organization's offices and other functions under one modern and efficient roof for the first time, and also will make life better for the dozens of horses — some aging, most ill or suffering other effects of neglect — living and being rehabilitated at the farm.
Two-thirds of the building is the horse arena, the other 6,000 square feet will be offices, an education center, meeting room and space to accommodate the organization’s 200-plus volunteers.
It is the first capital project for the organization in more than 40 years, and includes infrastructure, including new septic and water systems, parking and more.
Bickford said there will be a “welcome weekend” from Oct. 26 to 28, when the farm will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. so the public can get a look.
