Current Publishing, a Westbrook-based weekly newspaper publisher, has merged with Sun Media Group in Lewiston.
Current Publishing, founded in 2001 by Lee Hews, publishes the Current in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth and South Portland; the American Journal in Westbrook; Tri-Town Weekly in Freeport, Durham and Pownal; and the Lakes Region Weekly in Standish, Windham, Raymond, Naples, Bridgton, Casco, Gray and New Gloucester.
The Sun Journal reported that Hews and her business partner, Chris Harte, decided to combine forces with Sun Media Group to further strengthen the products and local news coverage. Hews will remain as publisher of Current Publishing.
“We will be able to have resources we could not have had if we didn’t combine forces. It’s a win-win,” she said.
Sun Media Group publishes the Sun Journal in Lewiston, The Forecaster group in southern and midcoast Maine and seven weekly publications in western Maine.
The Sun Journal reported that Stephen Costello, vice president for Sun Media, said the company is pleased to have Current Publications join its publishing group.
“Just as Sun Media has been for over 100 years, they have been locally owned and operated for the past 14 years and we are very excited about working together,” Costello said.
