Dam owner to pay $30 million for fish lifts

After years of negotiations, FPL Energy has agreed to spend more than $30 million to help restore fish habitats on the Saco River.

The Florida-based energy company, which owns nine dams on the Saco River, was pressured by state and federal regulators and conservation groups to install fish lifts and ladders that would allow fish to move upstream beyond the company's dams, according to Blethen Maine Newspapers. FPL said it would spend more than $30 million over 20 years to restore habitat for species including shad and Atlantic Salmon.

Blethen also reported that the deal means the end of questions for FPL about how its dams affect fish passage on the Saco River. "It provides a schedule and some predictability for us," FPL Senior Environmental Specialist Frank Dunlap told the news service.
