Fryeburg bans water station

Fryeburg's planning board on Tuesday night voted against a Poland Springs terminal opening here, thwarting the bottled water company once again. Poland Springs, owned by Nestle Waters North America, has been trying for more than two years to build a controversial $2.1 million loading station in town.

Planners said the facility would generate too much truck traffic for a rural, residential zone. Up to 50 trucks a day would enter the facility to fill up with water pumped from a Denmark aquifer to then transport it to a bottling facility elsewhere.

Poland Spring has not indicated whether they plan to appeal the decision, according to WCSH News.

The planning board's 3-1 vote follows a town meeting last week where residents renewed a six-month moratorium on transporting or processing water in Fryeburg.
