Danish farmers to tour Maine operations

Nearly three dozen organic grain and dairy farmers from the country of Denmark will be in Maine next week to tour farms in the Houlton, Orono and Skowhegan areas. The visits are part of the Danish farmers' weeklong tour in Maine, Vermont and Quebec.

A total of 35 Danish farmers, industry representatives and others will tour Maine from July 2-4, according to a press release from the University of Maine. They'll visit two organic dairy farms, Rainbow Valley Farm in Sidney and Lilley Farms in Smyrna, wheat and grain growers Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgewater and Nature's Circle Farm in New Limerick, as well as grain mills Aurora Mills in Linneus and Somerset Grist Mill in Skowhegan. They'll also visit the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers  Association farms in Unity and the UMaine Rogers Farm in Stillwater. UMaine Extension sustainable agriculture specialist Ellen Mallory and Tom Molloy, a plant soil and environmental sciences research associate, will lead the tour.

The visit is part of an exchange that started in 2010, when Maine and Vermont bread-wheat farmers and millers visited Denmark.
