Maine banks and credit unions are wrestling with another data breach that has compromised hundreds of members' Visa and MasterCards.
A theft last year against Princeton, N.J.,-based Heartland Payment Systems, which process payments for 250,000 restaurants, retailers and businesses, was disclosed Tuesday, according to the Portland Press Herald. The company processes 100 million transactions a months, and warned cardholders to check monthly statements dating back to last May for fraudulent activity.
Hackers stole card numbers and cardholder names, but did not access Social Security numbers or personal identification numbers, the paper reported. This latest breach follows a breach in 2007 at The TJX Cos., which owns retailers T.J. Maxx and Marshall's, and in 2008 at Hannaford Bros. Co. supermarkets. Banks are required by law to absorb the cost of the thefts, and are urging Maine legislators to require retailers to share the burden.
