Death at Bangor Raceway leads to federal fines

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway $5,000 in connection with the death of long-time racetrack employee Edwin Reynolds last September after a starting gate vehicle struck him while he was on the track, The Bangor Daily News reported.

The company offers live harness racing May through November, according to its website. The citation said the employer “did not assess the workplace to determine if hazards are likely to be present that necessitate the use of personal protective equipment,” and “did not assess the hazards associated with the operation of the open starting gate while foot traffic was permitted around the track.”

A spokesman told the paper Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway is preparing a response.
