Deep snow, cold delay start of maple syrup season
Colder-than-normal temperatures and deep snow are delaying the start of Maine’s maple syrup season, which traditionally begins in March.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that a number of western Maine maple syrup farmers are worried that this year’s production will be adversely affected by this year’s tough winter. In a typical year, Maine’s sap season runs four to six weeks, the newspaper reported.
University of Maine economics professor Todd Gabe estimates that Maine's maple industry contributes approximately $27.7 million directly to the Maine economy and generates 567 full- and part-time jobs and $17.3 million in wages, the newspaper reported.
