More details have emerged about the sale of the iconic Maine navigational company DeLorme to the Swiss-based Garmin that was announced on Thursday.
According to the Portland Press Herald, in addition to shifting DeLorme’s Yarmouth location into a research and development facility for its satellite communications technology, the map store housed within the location will be closed, eliminating “a handful of jobs” according to Kim Stiver, the company’s vice president of marketing.
While the closing of the map store will eliminate a number of jobs, both DeLorme and Garmin officials have said that most of the 92 full-time employees of the Yarmouth location will be retained.
As for the future of two of DeLorme’s most iconic properties, “The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer” and Eartha — the world’s largest rotating globe, Stiver told the Press Herald that Garmin has yet to provide an update about the future of the Gazetteer, while plans are being made to keep Eartha open to the public.
