Demolition halted at former Verso Paper Mill, new contractor sought
The new owners of the former Verso Paper Mill in Bucksport have halted the scheduled demolition of the mill after the Chicago-based contractor leading the project, DeNovo Constructors, failed to pay a number of subcontractors tasked with dismantling the nearly 90-year-old site.
AIM Development, a subsidiary of the Montreal-based metal recycling firm American Iron and Metal, purchased the former mill in early 2015 following the layoffs of more than 500 millworkers. The company hired DeNovo to start the $4.56 million demolition project in November, with 2017 given as the deadline for completion, according to the Bangor Daily News.
The suspension of demolition has come as a surprise to Bucksport town officials who met with AIM Vice President Jeffrey McGlin last week and was told the project was still on track, according to Interim Town Manager Susan Lessard.
The town has had no relationship with DeNovo, but required a $4.5 million bond from AIM to ensure that the former mill property would be completely demolished, with plans to eventually redevelop it as a commercial property.
Lessard has communicated with AIM’s legal counsel, saying that the company’s bond agents are now looking for a different contractor to complete the demolition of the former mill.
