DEP grant will expand recycling and composting at workplaces

The state Department of Environmental Protection has awarded $88,000 in grants to help six Maine companies and other organizations expand their waste recycling and composting efforts.

The DEP received seven applications for the grant program, its first supporting businesses, institutions and municipalities in solid waste management, the department said in a news release earlier this week.

The recipients are:

  • Bo Lait Farm, in Washington, to establish an onsite commercial composting facility for the Midcoast area, offering food-scrap composting to schools, hospitals, businesses and households in coordination with ScrapDogs Community Compost of Camden.
  • The Central Penobscot Solid Waste Facility, in Corinth, to construct a reuse building at its transfer station, offering second-hand consumer goods for residents of the facility’s member towns;
  • The Maine Resource Recovery Association, to pilot the recycling of PVC building materials from the waste stream of its member municipalities and companies;
  • Pleasant River Farms, in Mason, to expand its onsite composting and organic-material diversion, servings schools, hospitals and business in western Maine;
  • The Town of Falmouth, to construct and operate three drop-off sites for collecting food scraps, along with informational kiosks and educational activities;
  • The University of Maine at Presque Isle, to establish a one-year composting program on its campus, after which the operation is expected to become self-sustaining.

The DEP plans to issue a second request for grant proposals in early 2019, according to the release.
