The Maine Department of Environmental Protection yesterday approved a controversial 40-turbine wind project in Penobscot County.
First Wind of Massachusetts was granted a permit to build the $130 million wind power project on Rollins Mountain in Burlington, Lee, Lincoln and Winn. The company proposed the project last June. The Rollins project still awaits a green light from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and is also seeking construction financing.
If it is built, Rollins wind is expected to generate $10.4 million for Lincoln over 30 years, according to the Bangor Daily News. Estimates for other involved municipalities were not available to the paper.
The citizens group Friends of Lincoln Lakes, which has opposed the project in civil court, is planning to appeal the DEP's approval, the paper reported. The group claims the turbines would lower land values and that light and sound from the turbines would threaten human and animal health, though the state says there is no evidence to support those concerns.
