The state's Department of Environmental Protection has set aside 16 hours for its first public hearing on a Bowers Mountain wind power project.
The proposal, submitted by a subsidiary of the Mass.-based First Wind for a 16-turbine wind farm, is the company's second attempt at a plan for that project. The DEP rejected a previous application for a 27-turbine project.
The DEP said in a press release that it will hold two days of public hearings starting April 30 on the new plan from Champlain Wind LLC. The company and four intervenors will question each other and provide testimony.
The two-day hearings are expected to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., then become open to public comment after 6 p.m.
The Bangor Daily News reported four intervenors will participate in the hearings, including Maine Master Guide David Corrigan and representatives of the Partnership for the Preservation of the Downeast Lakes Watershed, who oppose the plan. Intervenors in support of the wind power plan include the Conservation Law Foundation and Maine Renewable Energy Associates.
Company officials told the paper that their latest plan reduces the footprint of the project by about 40%. Opponents say the project has negative scenic effects on the area.
