A Connecticut-based developer must pay the town of Wiscasset nearly $850,000 in back property taxes for a mixed-use project that never saw the light of day, a court has ruled.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Tuesday ruling comes after National RE/Source bought the 33-acre Mason Station property in Wiscasset in 2004 and eventually halted on its redevelopment plans after losing a partner.
The town of Wiscasset then placed liens on the property in late 2012 after the developer failed to pay property taxes. The town also filed a complaint against the developer seeking to reclaim those taxes, but the developer didn’t respond for 16 months. The developer eventually contested Wiscasset’s claim, arguing that the land was worth more than the taxes owed.
In its ruling, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court disagreed with the developer’s claim and stated the company had no excuse for taking so long to respond to Wiscasset’s complaint.
