Developers back out of Aroostook wind deal

EDP Renewables notified state regulators that it was withdrawing its application for a major wind project near Bridgewater in Aroostook County, the Bangor Daily News reported Monday.

In a Nov. 21 email to the state, EDP indicated that it was having trouble finding buyers for their power. The project would have produced 250 megawatts or more of power, the BDN reported.

It was included in an ambitious transmission proposal submitted by Central Maine Power and Emera Maine to deliver renewable wind energy from northern Maine that was rejected this fall by the three southern New England states seeking clean energy projects to meet renewable energy goals.

The joint project proposed by the two utilities, called the Maine Renewable Energy Interconnect, would have linked the proposed 600MW King Pine wind farm and another 650MW from two other Aroostook County projects, Number Nine Wind Farm and Horse Mountain, via a new 150-mile transmission line that would connect with the regional grid in Pittsfield.

The Number Nine Wind Project would have had as many as 119 turbines, which would have made it one of Maine’s largest wind projects.
