Dirigo Health moves out as ACA moves in

Joseph Bruno, board chairman of the state-run Dirigo Health insurance plan, says about 8,000 people on its rolls will have to find new coverage at the end of this year.

The Associated Press reported most of Dirigo Health's programs will be phased out Dec. 31 as some programs are shifted to other state agencies.

As of January, the program was serving around 15,600 people and 750 small businesses in the state.

Around 7,500 clients are expected to enroll in expanded state Medicaid programs, but about 8,000 will have to find new coverage when Dirigo Health expires on Dec. 31.

The AP reported that many of those patients are expected to enroll in health plans from the nonprofit Maine Community Health Options co-op, established in 2011 through a $62 million federal loan granted under the Affordable Care Act.

MCHO is one of two providers that has filed to provide an insurance plan through Maine's state health care exchange, an online marketplace required by the ACA to allow people to buy health insurance.
