The Brunswick area economy is faring no worse than the rest of the state despite the impending closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station, according to a state labor researcher.
At a meeting of the Governor's Advisory Council Tuesday, John Dorrer of the Maine Department of Labor told the group the Bath-Brunswick area is performing better than state averages in unemployment rates, job postings and retail sales, according to The Times Record. "This region has basically been performing slightly better, and following similar patterns, than the rest of the state in terms of unemployment rates," Dorrer said, adding there was "nothing disproportionate going on" in the area as a result of the base closure. The Maine DOL plans to post its data on the Brunswick region on its website.
The Governor's Advisory Council is charged with updating Gov. John Baldacci and the Legislature with the impacts of the redevelopment of the Brunswick Naval Air Station, scheduled to close in May 2011.
