The town of Dover-Foxcroft has taken ownership of the former Moosehead Manufacturing facility on the Piscataquis River after the previous owner stopped paying taxes on the property.
John Wentworth, former president of Moosehead Manufacturing Co., told the Bangor Daily News the owners decided to stop paying taxes on the 85,000-square-foot manufacturing facility to allow the town to take ownership because of the poor economy. The owners tried to sell the facility at auction, but were unsuccessful.
Taxes had not been paid on the property since 2007, when Moosehead Manufacturing went out of business and closed its furniture manufacturing facilities in Monson and Dover-Foxcroft because of competition with foreign imports. The unpaid taxes were $44,000, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Today Moosehead Furniture makes solid hardwood furniture in Monson, Maine. The Monson plant was purchased from Moosehead Manufacturing Company by Tardy-Connors LLC in 2007.
