Downeast Credit Union will open a new branch at 460 Wilson St. in Brewer, replacing a Bangor branch.

Downeast Credit Union was founded in 1941 as St. Croix Federal Credit Union. It now has 22,000 members at eight locations — in Baileyville, Belfast, Brewer, Calais, Machias, Richmond, Topsham and Unity.

Downeast Credit Union was ranked No. 17 on the Mainebiz list of the largest Maine-based credit unions, with $236 million in total assets.

The Brewer location replaces the branch it had in Bangor, at 24 Springer Drive. Both locations are owned by Rick Harnum of Harnum Holdings.

"Compared to our previous submarket in Bangor, the Brewer submarket offers a 40% increase in the number of households, while at the same time maintaining a robust business and employment sector. With this new location, we will be able to cater to a larger number of community members, as well as offer more affordable borrowing options and specialized assistance," said Joe Moses, the credit union's president and CEO.

The project began in 2019 with a market analysis by Bancography. Harnum Holdings helped with the real estate search. The project was designed by TAC Architectural Group. Construction was managed by E.W. Littlefield.

The completed project includes a two-lane drive-thru, interior ATM, large conference room space and two offices to handle new accounts and loans.

The grand opening will be held on Sept. 27 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ceremony will involve Downeast Credit Union team members and local officials.
