Downeast Health Services head steps down

Kathie Norwood has announced her departure from Ellsworth-based Downeast Health Services, where she served as executive director for the last nine years.

Norwood will accept a position as chief operating officer at Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems Healthcare Charities, according to the Ellsworth American.

Healthcare Charities, an affiliate of EMHS, made news this spring when a former employee was indicted for allegedly stealing $55,000 from the nonprofit.

Healthcare Charities has since instituted new internal protocols to protect against future theft, and will also perform background checks on all new employees.

The charity raises $10 million-$15 million annually to benefit EMHS organizations, including Eastern Maine Medical Center. It has 21 employees.
