Maine job count up in latest figures

Maine saw growth in jobs from June to July while job openings decreased nationwide, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Those figures, released Tuesday, show that the number of Maine jobs grew 3% from a seasonally adjusted 592,700 in June to 594,500.

Nationally, the number of job openings dropped from 3.72 million to 3.67 million. At the same time, the Associated Press reports, the national unemployment rate fell to 8.1% from 8.3%.

In Maine, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been on a steady increase since January, rising to 7.6% in July from 7.1% in January.

By sector, the DOL's latest seasonally adjusted job figures for Maine breaks down as follows: Construction jobs decreased from 23,600 in June to 23,200 in July; manufacturing jobs decreased from 50,200 to 50,000; trade, transportation and utilities jobs decreased from 119,500 to 118,700; financial sector jobs decreased from 31,900 to 31,700; professional and business service jobs increased from 56,700 to 57,100; education and health service jobs decreased from 120,400 to 119,900; leisure and hospitality jobs increased from 59,500 to 61,600; and government jobs increased from 100,700 to 101,000.
