Machias Bay Seafood suffered a blow when 700 pounds of scallops, valued at about $10,000, were stolen Wednesday, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Maine’s scallop season is well under way, having kicked off Dec. 1. The shellfish is valuable, averaging more than $12 per pound in 2014, and fishermen are expected to benefit from a management system of closures that protect the spawning biomass. The winter/spring fishery formerly provided a substantial source of income to fishing businesses at a time of year without many other fishing opportunities, But it experienced an all-time low in 2005 due to overfishing. The state and industry have been working since then to rebuild the resource.
Washington County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree told the paper his office is working with the Maine Marine Patrol to solve the theft.
