The Amtrak Downeaster service between Brunswick and Boston is expected to return to its normal schedule in a few weeks after tracks damaged by a harsh winter prompted delays and cancellations.
The Portland Press Herald reported the delays and cancellations could possibly be the worst they have been since the summer of 2004, which had cost the Downeaster $100,000.
Patricia Quinn, executive director of the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority, which operates the Downeaster, told the newspaper that her agency has yet to analyze the impact of this month’s slowdown. However, she said, ridership is down by nearly 2,600 passengers this month in comparison to May of last year.
Downeaster delays and cancellations began earlier this month as a result of a harsh winter and heavy snow melt that damaged about 27 noncontiguous miles of tracks between Freeport and Boston. The track’s owner, Pan Am Railways, is handling repairs.
